W2: The Day I Woke Up with a Superpower
It was just another ordinary morning—or at least, it should have been. I stumbled out of bed; my mind still foggy with sleep. But as I reached for my phone on the bedside table, it flew straight into my hand. Literally. No, I didn’t reach far enough; it flew. I blinked, staring at my hand, then at my phone. Maybe I was still dreaming. I tried it again, this time focusing on my water bottle across the room. It trembled, lifted an inch off the desk, and shot toward me, narrowly missing my face.
I wasn’t dreaming. I had
telekinesis.
The thrill was immediate and
electrifying. I spent the next few hours experimenting, my room turning into a
tornado of floating books, pens, and even my pillow. I felt
powerful—invincible, even. But the excitement quickly spiralled into chaos when
I lost focus. My desk lamp shattered against the wall, and my laptop nearly flew
out the window before I managed to catch it. This power was no joke. It was
exhilarating but dangerously unpredictable.
My heart raced as I realized the
consequences. What if I hurt someone? What if someone found out? I was just a
regular person yesterday, and today I was… what, a superhero? A freak?
Keeping my new power a secret was
harder than I thought. I almost slipped up during breakfast when I accidentally
floated a spoon toward my bowl instead of reaching for it. My mom gave me a
puzzled look, but she shrugged it off. My brother wasn’t so easily convinced.
He kept staring; suspicion etched on his face.
It was worse with my friends. At
school, I was jumpy, constantly worried I’d accidentally send a textbook flying
or open a locker without touching it. My best friend, Alyse, noticed
immediately. “You’re acting weird,” she said, narrowing her eyes. “Are you
hiding something?”
I was. But how could I tell her?
Would she freak out? Would she even believe me? Our friendship was built on
trust and honesty, but this secret threatened to shatter that foundation. I
felt more isolated than ever, the weight of my power heavy on my shoulders.
The moment that changed everything happened while shopping with Alyse.
That day, we were walking back from the mall, bags in hand, chatting and laughing. As we approached the crosswalk, I noticed a blind man making his way toward the road. His cane tapped against the pavement as he moved forward—completely unaware that the light was still red.
A car was speeding straight toward him.
People shouted, but it was too late. My heart pounded. I didn’t think—I just acted.
Focusing with everything I had, I stopped him mid-step. It was as if an invisible force held him in place. The car zoomed past, missing him by inches.
Gasps filled the air. The man looked confused, reaching out as if trying to understand why he had suddenly stopped moving. After a few seconds, I carefully released him, allowing him to step forward just as the light turned green.
Alyse stood beside me, her eyes wide with shock.
“That… that was you, wasn’t it?” she whispered.
I swallowed hard, my pulse racing. Around us, people murmured, wondering what had just happened. Some were looking around as if trying to spot a hidden guardian angel. I grabbed Alyse’s arm.
“We need to get out of here,” I muttered, quickly pulling her away.
Back in the park, I finally gathered the courage to tell Alyse everything.
Her face shifted from shock to disbelief, then to something else—understanding.
“So… you actually have superpowers?” she whispered. “That’s… that’s insane! But also… kinda amazing.”
“You’re not scared?” I asked hesitantly.
She shook her head. “You just saved someone. If you can use your powers to help people, then why be afraid?”
Her words struck me. I had spent so much time seeing my power as a burden, something I had to hide. But what if it wasn’t a curse? What if it was an opportunity?
Life didn’t go back to normal. But that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing.
With Alyse’s support, I started to gain better control over my ability. I learned to refine my telekinesis, to use it deliberately instead of fearfully. I even began to see the possibilities—not just for fun, but for something bigger.
I could make a difference.
But I also understood something else. Having a power didn’t make me a hero—my choices did.
